Underneath the north side of Tower Bridge, in an area where thousands of people pass everyday, lies a site known as Dead Man’s Hole.
This alcove right by the waters edge looks relatively normal to the unsuspecting passer-by, but it hides a dark and gruesome history.
In the Victorian times this alcove was a mortuary where dead bodies would wash up from the river with an alarming regularity.
Down the eastern side of the bridge visitors will notice an ‘L’ shaped set of stone steps curving down into the Thames, which is thought to have been used to make retrieving the bodies easier. Read More...
